Amorgos – The wild beauty of the Cyclades

Amorgos is theThe most eastern island of the Cyclades with a mountainous and volcanic morphology. Chora, a picturesque village in the middle of theIsland is one of the most beautiful villages in the Cyclades surrounded by charming windmills and filled with beautiful Byzantine and early Christian churches. As you walk between its narrow streets you can admire the white houses with blue shutters and the impressive rock at the top of which are perched the ruins ofA kastro venetian. Let yourself be guided by the small stairs, stopping in a Kafenio to enjoy a good iced coffee with a breathtaking view.

Amorgos is one of the best islands for trekking and hiking. lIsland offers many trails, which lead the visitor to landscapes of exceptional and wild beauty. These trails have the advantage of generally leading from one village to another promising you to find a coffee or a tavern on arrival to refresh you!

The most important monument in the region is the unique architectural monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, 300 meters above sea level, dating from the 9th century. Built on vertical rocks, it faces the infinite blue of the Aegean Sea. It has a height of 40m. and a width only 5m.! The monks’ dormitories, kitchens, warehouses and all the other areas of the monastery are dug into the rock, while the monastery is home to precious ecclesiastical treasures: Byzantine icons and gospels manuscripts. At the foot of the monastery, you will find the small beach of Agia Anna, scenery of the famous Big Blue by Luc Besson.

The gastronomy of Amorgos

Amorgos adopts traditional local cuisine with theuse of pure raw materials. The main products ofAmorgos are cheese, paximadi (biscotte), pasteli, meat, fish, wine and raki cooked. You will also find aromatic herbs, honey from flowers and thyme, and several kinds of olives. Here is what you should not miss to taste in Amorgos:

the cooked raki

The cooked raki is the typical drink ofAmorgos and is served in the houses for the welcome. Its story begins many years ago when women dAmorgos were looking for a way to participate in the social life of theIsland without having to drink the strong raki as the men drank. so they made a raki liqueur with theAdded honey and various aromatic herbs and spices. It is said that the best roasted raki from theIsland is prepared at Panagia Hozoviotissa monastery!

Cheeses and patatato

Several thousand goats live on theAmorgos Island and offer many cheeses such as Mizithra, LAnthotyri and the Xero. Of these goats is also cooked the patatato, a typical dish of theIsland found in all taverns, with goat meat and potato. This dish is also served during the many festivals organized by theisland.
